SONOMA, Calif. — Marco Andretti paced the final practice leading up to today’s qualifying session for tomorrow’s Go Pro Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway.
The Andretti Autosport driver set the quickest lap of the weekend at 1:16.3052 on his fifth lap of the session. His lap was just five one-hundreths of a second off the track record set by Will Power last year.
Andretti led Team Penske’s Juan Pablo Montoya, who was just .0704s shy of Andretti’s quickest time. Andretti Autosport cars fared will this session with Ryan Hunter-Reay logged the 3rd quickest time with Carlos Munoz in fifth place and Alexander Rossi landing in seventh place.
Championship contenders Simon Pagenaud and Will Power both were near the front with Power scoring the fourth quickest time with Pagenaud in sixth place.
Two accidents slowed the session as Josef Newgarden went off track in Turn 2 and crashed into the tire barriers with 25 minutes remaining in the session. Meanwhile, James Hinchcliffe lost control of his No. 5 Arrow Honda in turn 11 and smashed into the wall. Both drivers were uninjured.Click here for results from Practice 3 at Sonoma Raceway.
Qualifying for the Go Pro Grand Prix of Sonoma begins at 3 p.m. PST and will be televised live on the NBC Sports Network, with the race set for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
