A frightening incident on pit road on lap 64 has eliminated Alexander Rossi and Helio Castroneves from the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Rossi had been running in the top five for much of the race’s first 64 laps and was leading when he made his second pitstop.

Following a routine stop, Rossi was released from his pit stall just as Charlie Kimball was attempting to pull into his pit stall and the two collided. Rossi was launched over #83 Trisheba Chevrolet and landed on top of the #3 Hitachi Chevrolet of Helio Castroneves.

Castroneves and Rossi climbed from their cars unhurt while Kimball was refired and continued the race. Rossi was clearly unhappy because of the accident, but was more concerned for Castroneves’ safety.

“I was released. I was in the slow lane. Kimball was into fast lane to box. I was still in my lane. I know what happened. I was in the slow lane. Very unfortunate,” Rossi said. “I was concerned about Helio. Just glad he’s alright.”

Castroneves’ car was taken back to the garage and is under repair in order to try to renter the race. The Brazillian entered this weekend’s race 111 points behind Team Penske teammate and points leader Simon Pagenaud.
