When Dreyer & Reinbold Racing (DRR) returns to the Verizon IndyCar Series paddock for the 102nd Running of the Indianapolis 500, they’ll do so with at least one familiar face behind the wheel.
The organization announced Thursday that Sage Karam will return to the team for the third-consecutive year, piloting their No. 24 Chevrolet in the 500-mile event with sponsorship support from Wix Filters.
Excited to announce @WIXFilters partnership with @DRRIndyCar at the 102nd #Indy500 and young racer @SageKaram . Sage will drive the No. 24 DRR @TeamChevy Dallara in his 5th 500, 4th with @DRRIndyCar. Karam, 22, has joined the IndyCar field for the Indy 500 in each year since 2014 – competing three times in one-off runs with DRR, and once as part of a 12-race stint with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2015. The Pennsylvanian’s best result in the prestigious race came back in his 2014 rookie effort, when he rose from 31st to ninth to claim the race’s Hard Charger award.
Prior to his IndyCar debut Karam competed on the Mazda Road to Indy, earning three wins and the 2013 series championship in Indy Lights. Karam has also participated in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in recent years, running part-time with CGR’s sports car program in 2014 and ’15 before completing the full 2017 season with 3GT Racing.
DRR owner Dennis Reinbold has fielded 36 entries in the Indy 500 since 1999, with a career-best result of fourth with Oriol Servia in 2014. His organization intends to field two cars in this year’s running of the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing,’ leaving one entrant still to be announced.
It’s official! I’ll be returning to @IMS this May to run in my 5th straight Indianapolis 500. It will be my fourth year with @DRRIndyCar and a new partnership with @WIXFilters for me! Really humbled and blessed for this opportunity. Let’s get to work! #WIXIndy pic.twitter.com/H8dj1KH5gp
