AVONDALE, Ariz. – Who says teammates can’t have fun at each other’s expense?

RFK Racing teammates Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher have found themselves locked in a prank war over recent weeks, with Buescher lobbing the first shots and Preece getting his revenge over the finale weekend at Phoenix Raceway.

It all began back at Kansas Speedway when Buescher, the tactical Texan took the doors off of Preece’s Ford Bronco as it was parked in the infield and then to up the ante, hid it in an undisclosed location.

“Where’d he put my f***** door?!” Preece quipped on a video posted to the RFK Racing social media account on X documenting the moment Preece discovered the missing door.

A few weeks later, Buescher poked the bear once more during an autograph session at Martinsville Speedway but getting a number of fans to hand out diecast Ford Broncos with a door missing.

Preece meanwhile was calculating his next move, alluding to what could be coming on the RFK Backstretch Banter show on the team’s YouTube page.

“…What I will say is my man is going to get it back and it’s going to be good and it’s all my idea,” Preece noted. “So, when everybody hears about this, just remember it was executed by me.”

Over the weekend at Phoenix, Preece executed his plan, wrapping Buescher’s car in three rolls of plastic wrap and adding Christmas lights on top of that, providing his teammate with a Halloween surprise.

“It was pretty good. I don’t even think he’s on his way here yet because there’s one more thing that he might find out this morning, but it was three rolls and I wish somebody could get a video of him trying to cut it off,” Preece said.

That other surprise Preece had waiting for Buescher? Zip ties on the driveshaft.

“It was more fun before he got me back,” Buescher joked once he made his way to the track on Saturday.

“It is my fault for starting it, but we got into Kansas. And he is a big car guy, so am I, but he likes everything lowered and slamming the ground. We got two Ford Bronco rental cars in Kansas. I said, man, I’m going to turn you in a four-by-four guy before you know it. I said, we’ll take the doors off, top off, we’ll go find some trails around here. And he made a smart comment about absolutely not. It’s just not for him.

“I said, all right, well I’ll just take the doors off for him and I’m going to see what it’s like. And it was really easy to get the door off. That was great. But then he parked so close to the fence, I couldn’t get the driver’s door off. So I really wanted that to be a little bit more spectacular than it was.

“And it still made me laugh watching video of him driving to the airport 30 or 40 minutes away with no door.”

Buescher might have had an inkling of Preece’s master plan, but was still surprised when he awoke to find his car missing and it covered in plastic wrap on Halloween morning.

“I’ve had people call me, I’ve had friends say, Hey, he’s trying to set you up for something else. And they said at one point he was trying to lower my Raptor, my personal truck back home. I was like, yeah, I don’t think I’m going to let him do that, but he got me pretty good yesterday, so it is my fault for starting this,” said Buescher.

“He says we’re even. And I kind of thought that, yeah, maybe after he towed it we were even, but then he saran wrapped it a lot in the parking lot of the hotel when I got back. I got that cut off this morning and got in it and started down the road and made it about 15 feet and realized he zip tied the drive shaft, not with small drive or zip ties, real big ones that are really hard to cut with a knife.”

So, are the two drivers even now? Neither one is ready to call a truce.

“So yeah, now I feel like part three coming at you, so there will be a part three. It’s definitely not over. This is not over,” said Buescher.

“…I don’t get to get anything out there in the news for a couple months, but yes, I have plenty of time to think and I’ve already got a couple ideas up my sleeve. So yeah, we’ve got people. I’ve been at Roush a long time. I know people, you better be careful.”

If the prank war does continue, Preece is ready for whatever his teammate has in store for him.

“It just depends if he wants to keep going. When he got me the first time and the second time that’s when I knew,” said Preece.

“When you get me, I’m gonna get you really bad, so it doesn’t matter. It’s almost like if you ram me on the track, I’m gonna make sure I get you pretty good, so the same thing goes with pranks.”

As for team co-owner Brad Keselowsi, he’s enjoying watching the back and forth between his two drivers from the sidelines.

“They’re having fun, let ’em have some fun. It’s a long season,” said Keselowski.

Buescher explained that they haven’t roped Keselowski into their pranks, yet, but if a shot is fired at them, they’re ready to fire one right back at the boss man.

“We just share the stories with Brad. Neither of us dares to touch anything of Brad’s because we both like our jobs, but I think Brad’s getting satisfaction out of hearing the back and forth,” said Buescher.

“I don’t think he wants to be in on it. And me and Ryan are not going to be the first one to act against Brad. If he acts against us, we can fire it off from there.”

But Keselowski had a warning for his drivers should they choose to go down that path.

“Buyer beware. Yeah, anybody that comes for me better not miss.”
