As initially reported by Motorsport.com, Luca Filippi might be set to join Dale Coyne Racing alongside Conor Daly for the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

Coyne noted that there were a handful of drivers in contention for the seat, but Filippi was among the front runners.

“Luca is good, he was comfortable in an IndyCar right away back in 2013, and I’d say he’s been impressive since,” Coyne told David Malsher of Motorsport. “So we’ve had serious talks and I think he would be a good fit for the team.”

Coyne also hinted that he would like to have the same driver lineup throughout the season rather than a revolving door of drivers that he has been known to do.

Tristan Vautier, who was impressive in his stint in the #18 car for DCR last year, was in contention for the ride but apparent budget issues have left the Frenchman on the outside looking in.

It is also known that Coyne has been in talks with Gabby Chaves, who was released in the wake of the merger of Bryan Herta Autosport and Andretti Autosport.
