By David Morgan, Associate Editor LEBANON, Tenn. – Count Mother Nature as a Denny Hamlin fan. After Hamlin posted the fastest time in the first round of qualifying with a lap of 29.848 seconds, 160.413 mph, heavy rain moved in over the 1.333-mile concrete oval, forcing NASCAR to cancel the second round of qualifying. As a result, Hamlin’s first round speed was enough to deliver him the pole – his second of the season. “We didn’t start off practice that stellar, but with every run we made, we just kept gettingRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor LEBANON, Tenn. – Will he stay or will he go? That has been the question of late for Martin Truex Jr’s tenure in the NASCAR Cup Series. After being noncommittal on his future behind the wheel of the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, the 2017 series champion announced his decision Friday at Nashville Superspeedway with three simple words. “I’ll be back.” Truex explained that over the course of the past six months, he had taken a lot of time to look back over his careerRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor LEBANON, Tenn. – Bubba Wallace has gotten his weekend in Music City off on the right foot, putting up the fastest time in the lone practice session ahead of Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville. While Ross Chastain put up the fast time early, it was Wallace who would come out as the fastest driver at the end of the session, taking his No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota to the top of the board with a lap of 29.609 seconds, 161.708 mph. In addition to the fastestRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor LEBANON, Tenn. – The pairing of JTG Daugherty Racing and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will continue into the foreseeable future after the team announced a multi-year contract extension with the Olive Branch, Miss. native on Friday. Stenhouse, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series winner and two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, began his Cup career with Roush Fenway before moving over to JTG in 2020 to take over driving duties in the No. 47 Chevrolet. While Stenhouse has yet to make a return to Victory Lane since that time,Read More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor LEBANON, Tenn. — A year after debuting to a sold-out crowd, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Nashville Superspeedway this weekend for the second running of the Ally 400 on Sunday. Prior to its Cup debut in 2021, the track located on the outskirts of Nashville in Lebanon, Tennessee, was no stranger to hosting NASCAR events with both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR camping World Truck Series running there from 2001 to 2011 before the track was shuttered. The Nashville tracks serves as an oddityRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor All signs pointed to Sunday’s Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America being the place where Alexander Rossi would make his long-awaited return to victory lane, but in the end, it just wasn’t meant to be. After getting the 2022 NTT IndyCar Series season off on the wrong foot, the 30-year-old has seen steady gains in performance, banking four top-10 finishes in the five previous races this season, including a top-five in the Indianapolis 500 and a runner-up finish last weekend in Detroit. Riding that wave ofRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor The second half of the NASCAR Cup Series regular season rolls on as the West Coast comes calling this weekend, with Sonoma Raceway playing host to Sunday’s running of the Toyota/Save Mart 350. A 12-turn technical road course situated about 30 miles north of San Francisco, Sonoma is one of six road courses on the 2022 schedule, with Sonoma first joining the circuit back in 1989. Over the years, the course at Sonoma Raceway has gone through a few configuration changes. When the track was firstRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor INDIANAPOLIS – With the laps winding down in Sunday’s 106th running of the Indianapolis 500, Pato O’Ward could do nothing but helplessly watch Marcus Ericsson inch closer and closer to racing immortality. Sitting in the runner-up position, a few seconds in arears of Ericsson’s Honda, if nothing changed in the closing stages of the race, O’Ward would fall agonizingly short of a career-defining win. All he needed was a chance. When Jimmie Johnson crashed with six laps to go, bringing out the yellow and subsequently theRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor INDIANAPOLIS – Tony Kanaan came into Sunday’s 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 as a driver with nothing to lose. As a part of a five-car stable for Chip Ganassi Racing, in a special one-off appearance to pilot the No. 1 Honda, it was win or go home for the Brazilian driver and when the checkered flag flew, he nearly pulled it off. After charging up through the top-10 following his last pit stop, Kanaan settled into third-place, but was too far back to be withinRead More
By David Morgan, Associate Editor INDIANAPOLIS – Heralded rookies Romain Grosjean and Jimmie Johnson came into their first attempt at running the Indianapolis 500 looking to bring home a solid finish, but both found out the hard way just how tough racing in the NTT IndyCar Series at 16th and Georgetown can be. Both drivers showed speed throughout the Month of May, qualifying inside the top-12 and running well in the practices leading into Sunday’s 106th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, but when the green flag dropped it wasRead More
