By Toby Christie, NASCAR Editor No team has been stronger in 2016 than the Joe Gibbs Racing stable. Led by reigning champion, Kyle Busch, the team sports seven victories through the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ first 15 races of the year. However the team has a huge problem shaping, and it’s one that many other teams probably wish they had to deal with — they have too many talented drivers, and not enough cars to put them in. Currently the Sprint Cup Series team is packed-full with Busch, Carl Edwards, DennyRead More
By Seth Eggert, NASCAR Writer CONCORD, N.C. – For NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular Denny Hamlin, today’s Hisense 4K TV 300 marked his first Xfinity Series race of 2016. This was also Hamlin’s first race in the Xfinity Series since Dover International Speedway last fall. Hamlin qualified his Hisense USA Toyota Camry third, behind teammates Erik Jones and Daniel Suarez. The beginning of the race was filled with cautions, preventing many from getting into a rhythm. Hamlin followed Jones by Suarez as he spun his times on the start. BothRead More
By Seth Eggert, NASCAR Writer CONCORD, N.C. – Coming into the Hisense 4K TV 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Erik Jones sat third in points and was looking at continuing his momentum from his win two weeks ago at Dover International Speedway. Jones was fastest in the first practice and qualified his No. 20 GameStop Toyota Camry on the pole for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race. This was the fourth pole for Jones this season. Jones easily cleared teammate Daniel Suarez as Suarez spun his tires on the start. JonesRead More
By David Morgan, NASCAR Writer As one of the newer tracks on the circuit, Kansas Speedway has had its share of races that have both been exciting and those that have been, well, not so exciting. The 1.5 mile track, which boasted 15 degree banking in its turns when added to the Sprint Cup Series schedule in 2001, underwent a facelift in 2012 to increase the banking to progressive banking ranging from 18 to 20 degrees. In this week’s edition of “Throwback Thursday Theater”, we’ll take a look back atRead More
By Seth Eggert, NASCAR Writer For the fourth race in a row, and the fifth time in nine races this season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has visited victory lane. This time, it was Carl Edwards who won the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway in a last lap, final corner, bump and run on teammate Kyle Busch. Edwards also won last weekend’s Food City 500 at Bristol. Fellow JGR drivers Denny Hamlin, who won the season opening Daytona 500, and Matt Kenseth, theRead More
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service RICHMOND, Va. – For the first time this season, the driver of the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet was the driver who was supposed to be behind the wheel. Returning sooner than expected from a burst fracture to his L1 vertebra suffered during an offseason all-terrain vehicle accident, Tony Stewart took to the track during opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice on Friday at Richmond International Raceway, preparing for his first competition of the season in Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 (1 p.m. ET onRead More
By David Morgan, NASCAR Writer For Virginia native Denny Hamlin, a trip to Richmond is like coming home. Hamlin grew up in Chesterfield, Virginia, less than 25 miles from Richmond International Raceway, and has taken to his hometown track like a duck to water. Despite early season success of winning the Daytona 500 and two additional top-five finishes in the first five races of 2016, Hamlin and his No. 11 team have been struggling through the month of April, having yet to score a finish higher than 12th in theRead More
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service BRISTOL, Tenn. – Danica Patrick and Denny Hamlin had had their differences in the past, but what happened in Saturday morning’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Bristol Motor Speedway had nothing to do with old grudges. Nevertheless, contact between their two cars bent the sheet metal on both vehicles, Hamlin’s on the right front and Patrick’s on the left rear. Patrick, on new tires, was struggling with the handling of her No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet and had difficulty holding the bottom.Read More
By Joey Barnes, Editor-in-Chief Denny Hamlin headed into Martinsville Speedway with high hopes to overcome mistakes from recent visits at the half-mile oval, but Sunday’s STP 500 proved no different for the defending Daytona 500 champion. Hamlin, 35, had five wins in 20 previous races at Martinsville, including 16 top 10 finishes, but he acknowledged earlier in the week that recent mistakes have hurt his chances to secure wins. Sunday proved to be no different. From the start of the race Hamlin was a man on the move, but itRead More
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service Who provides Denny Hamlin his most formidable competition at Martinsville? No, it’s not Jimmie Johnson, who has won eight times at the fabled short track. And it’s not Joey Logano, who has won the last three poles at Martinsville. Denny Hamlin’s stiffest competition at the .526-mile speedway is Denny Hamlin, because, all too often, the driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota has beaten himself. “I don’t know how many pit road penalties I’ve had here at this race track, or whyRead More
