It’s the end of an era.
For nearly a quarter of a century, Scott Dixon has been synonymous with Chip Ganassi Racing, but at the end of the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season, it all comes to an end.
On Thursday, the team released a statement regarding Dixon’s future with the team, noting that the six-time IndyCar Series champion will be heading elsewhere when the checkered flag falls on the 2026 season in September.
First joining Ganassi in 2002 in what was then the CART Series and transitioning with the team into the Indy Racing League and now the current IndyCar Series, the pairing of Dixon and Ganassi became a fruitful one with the New Zealander winning all six of his championships with the team, but also amassing 58 of his 59 career wins with the organization as well.
“Scott Dixon has recently informed the team that he will not be returning in 2027. Scott has meant so much to CGR over the past 24 years. Together we’ve shared championships, many victories, and countless moments that have helped define this organization,” the statement read.
The team added that they made a multi-year offer to Dixon to attempt to keep him behind the wheel of the No. 9 Honda, but that offer was rebuffed with Dixon electing to seek other options for 2027 and beyond.
“Because of everything we’ve accomplished together, and the legacy Scott has built here, we believed it was important to give him the opportunity to finish his career at Chip Ganassi Racing, and we made him a multi-year offer to do just that,” the statement continued.
“We respect that he’s chosen a different path and wish him nothing but continued success. Scott will always be a special part of this team’s history, and we’re grateful for everything we’ve accomplished together.
“Our focus now is on finishing this season strong with the No. 9 PNC team while also preparing for the future at Chip Ganassi Racing.”
Per a report from RACER, it is believed that Dixon will be joining the Arrow McLaren stable next season, but nothing has been made official on his landing spot for the years ahead.
In the current standings, Dixon sits 10th in points, some 163 markers behind teammate and points leader Alex Palou, having scored a season-best finish of third in Long Beach and finishing in the top-10 on five different occasions throughout the first 10 races of the season.
Dixon and CGR return to the site of their last victory together at Mid-Ohio this weekend, where Dixon enters as the defending race winner.
