Kvapil Breaks Through with First Career O’Reilly Win at Indianapolis; JRM Finishes 1-2-3-4

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – This one has been a long time coming.

Carson Kvapil has come up agonizingly short of winning in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series over the past two seasons, but the wait for victory No. 1 is over after the 23-year-old held off veteran teammate Justin Allgaier down the stretch to win Saturday’s Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Kvapil, who started second on the day, maintained a presence inside the top-10 throughout the day, but with 21 laps to go, he made the race winning move, passing JR Motorsports teammate Ross Chastain to move into the catbird seat.

As the laps clicked away, Kvapil held a steady margin over the challengers behind him, which eventually became a JRM 1-2-3-4 train at the front of the field with Kvapil continuing to lead the way.

With six to go, Allgaier, the wily veteran advanced into the runner-up position and was gaining ground each lap on his young teammate, with the two running nose to tail on the final lap.

If Kvapil was going to fall short yet again, it was going to be his teammate that would have to drive the stake in his heart to make it happen. But try as he might, Allgaier was not able to mount enough of a run over those final four corners to surpass Kvapil, with the No. 1 Chevrolet finishing in position No. 1 and finally capturing that elusive win.

“It means the world to me. Man, I don’t know. It’s very emotional,” said Kvapil. “I rode around on that lap backwards and just thought about all of the hard work I’ve put in. Me and my dad, Travis, to get to this point and the faith that Dale Jr., L.W. Miller and Kelley Miller put behind me to give me this opportunity and give me a second chance to come back at it this year.

“This group of 1 guys on this car are amazing. I knew we were going to get one and I’m hoping we can chase some more towards the end. I just can’t believe it. It’s amazing. It’s been a lot of race and a lot of hours working building towards this.

Team owner Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has long had faith that Kvapil could get it done, he just needed a break – one that he finally got on Saturday in Indianapolis.

“I told him the other day, I said, “This second half of the year, this is your opportunity to stake your claim and show you belong and look at it as an opportunity,” Earnhardt said after Kvapil finished second at Atlanta two weeks ago.

“Don’t look at it as, man, the pressure’s on. What a tough spot to be in. Bullshit. You got a great race car, great crew chief, you got fast cars. It’s a great spot to be in. Go the rest of the season and just maximize it and kick ass and have fun and see what happens at the end of the day.”

That pep talk paid off in dividends as Kvapil has now added his name to the list of race winners to bring home a victory under the JRM umbrella.

“This has been a long time coming,” Earnhardt said as he got emotional watching Kvapil celebrate on the frontstretch at Indianapolis on Saturday.

“He’s like a son almost. You work with these guys for so long and you work so hard. We worked so hard with Josh Berry and all of our drivers. You just want them to have success and he’s got to win to keep going. You’ve got to win if you want to stay in this deal. Man, he got so close. I’m just so, so happy for him, for Travis his dad, Caden his brother.”

Allgaier would cross the line in second, 0.643 seconds in arears of Kvapil, followed by Chastain, and Chase Elliott, who came from the back of the field at the start of the race to secure the top four sweep for JRM.

“I just needed some more laps,” said Allgaier. “I felt like we did a really good job. We don’t lose control in that last restart, maybe it’s a little bit different story, but I just felt like as a whole, we knew the box we were in, we knew we were going to be good on the long run, and we were great on the long run. It just came up a couple laps early.

“Proud of our team. To run 1-2-3-4 as a company, the Hendrick engine shop obviously is phenomenal and they’re doing a great job right now. Everybody at Chevrolet, all the men and women at JR Motorsports. I mean, this is really, truly, it’s a big deal for them and it’s special for them. So, we’ll enjoy it.

“The competitor in me always wants to win, but when you step back and look at the 10,000 foot view, it was a great day for the company, great day for all of our partners.

“And honestly, I’m jealous that he gets to go kiss those bricks.”

William Sawalich finished as the first non-JRM car in fifth, with the remainder of the top-10 going to Brent Crews, Corey Day, Sheldon Creed, Brandon Jones, and Austin Hill.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series will have a week off before getting back in action on August 8 at Iowa Speedway. Just two races remain in the regular season with seven of the 12 spots in the postseason already locked up.
